Erie's Season Ends in First Round of Playoffs |
The Erie RiverRats lost a hardfought playoff game on Thursday night to the Reading Express by the final score of 67-57. The game was a back-and-forth affair featuring 15 lead changes and 2 ties, and was not decided until the last minute of the game.
Erie took its last lead of 57-54 on a 31-yard field goal by J.R. Cipra with 55 seconds remaining in the game. Erie appeared to have sealed the victory on Reading's drive when it forced a fumble on a sack of Reading quarterback Rob Flowers by Erie DL Phil Tillman which the 'Rats recovered. However, the officials made a questionable judgement call, ruling the play an incomplete forward pass, allowing Reading to retain possession. On the ensuing play, Flowers connected with WR Shawn Foxworth in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with just 15 seconds left. Erie had one more chance to win the game in the last few seconds, but QB Rod Rutherford was picked off on the last play of the game, which was returned for an Express touchdown making the final score 67-57 in Reading's favor.
Rutherford completed 19 of 39 passes for 258 yards and five touchdowns, and added two rushing touchdowns. WR Darmel Whitfield led the 'Rats receivers with 8 catches and 3 touchdowns. WR Eugene Baker exceeded 100 yards receiving for the third consecutive game with 115 yards on 7 receptions including one touchdown.
